Typical Sunday in Ajaccio

Sunday is market day – flea market and food market! The flea market is full of exciting junk like 45 vinyls by Tino Rossi, Charles Rocchi and other Corsican swooners, old keys, shoes, electronics, movies, French romance novels, jewelry, typewriters, furniture and other such what-have-you’s that you see at flea markets. We have picked up quite a selection of interesting ‘stuff’.

On our way to the market, we encountered 95% of Ajaccio out playing Bocce Ball in a tent shell at Place Miot. This is not a usual occurrence, I think. Although Bocce ball is.

Our first Jack Russell sighting

Then we went to the food market where we got spices, honey and hummed over olives that we never did buy though I wish we had!

We left passing myriad people eating sea urchins, sea urchin innerds wherever the eye could see… and found our way out of that and on our way to find somewhere to eat something, anything we could find (other than sea urchins!)

This is where we came across a cute dog – spot him in this photo

Then we went out to Rue Fesch bakery where we bought pizza and sat down on a bench to eat it… and found this cat trying to get back inside. We named him Patrick, Patrick Poggi after one of my students. Poor Patrick Poggi, there he was on the outside trying to get in through a see through wall… quite perplexing!

And here’s Spot the neighbourhood homeless or maybe not homeless dog…

Just down the street we discovered James, so named because he’s Patrick Poggi’s best friend. James doesn’t look as well taken care of as Patrick

Here’s an interesting display in a wall – one of many in fact

Geraniums and shutters on a falling apart building

Plant against a blue sky, building and shutters – too bad there’s a chirstmas decoration in the way (in February?)

Ferns and another interesting display outside this restaurant

After our walk along Rue Fesch we headed out of the nice part of town to a not so nice part to find bookshops. On our way we discovered this unfortunate scene – the rebels strike again, trying to win their vote one rolly bin at a time!

For Rhona: not only Old Hokonui malt whiskey (notice the skull and cross-bone) but also KNOB CREEK whiskey!

Just one of many dog salons – this one with a very clever name…

Photobucket

The Cyrnos Palace on the corner of Rue Miss Campell – very attractive building. At one time it was one of Ajaccio’s ritziest hotels and was built on property owned by Miss Campbell and we have not discovered who Miss Campbell is

Vaguely Aztec like church at the bottom corner of Rue Miss Campbell

Overgrown garden we pass on our way home when not walking next to the sea

Here’s Desmond, taken up residence across from the Inspection Academy

And Margot our new and beautiful friend who is so strikingly like Tess (ah I miss Tess!) – we think she might be pregnant, and wonder if Desmond is her man

Photobucket

As a side note there is a Margot in a class at Res des Iles and when we asked a student this week how to say ‘dangereux’ in English she said with a sly look in her eye and attitude in her voice ‘daangerousss’ – you’ll have to ask me or mom for a reenactment of this moment – very amusing rendition of Dangerous from a 10 year old Corsican!

That’s all for Sunday!

Stay tuned for Monday which = BONIFACIO!!!
